This sheep and cattle Station has its main entrance located off Lavenham Road,
about 6 km north of Patutahi.
Tangihanga Station encompasses 3240 hectares (8000 acres) ranging
from flat to medium hill country and is divided into:
2600 ha pastoral
180 ha arable lease
240 ha forestry
220 ha is unproductive (roads, scrub, buildings and yards etc)
The Station employs three shepherds and two general hands.
Sheep
Total sheep numbers are approximately 14,700. Of these, 10,600 sheep
are breeding ewes, predominantly Romney (7000) which have been the
mainstay of the sheep flock in the past. The remaining breeding
ewes include 3000 East Fresian x Romney and 600 Poll Dorset x Romney.
Twenty five percent of the sheep flock are ewe hoggets which are
mated in early May to produce lambs at the end of September.
Cattle
Of the 2,213 cattle on the Station, 1,130 are breeding cows with
18 breeding bulls.
Cattle breeds are predominantly Angus with a little Hereford blood.
The bulls are predominantly Angus but include four Charolais bulls
to mate with older cows to produce larger calves which are sold
as surplus stock.
Mating occurs towards the end of November for calving in early September.
