Alan is a chartered accountant and former partner of a major
international accounting firm with 20+ years in Canada and New Zealand.
Alan's experience developed in the area of buying, selling and repositioning
small, medium and large businesses.
Alan maintains a range of directorships in various organisations
involved in resource development, change management, business transformation
and repositioning, market development and intellectual property
development to keep abreast of current business issues both local
and international.
As a part of his experience at governance level, Alan has had considerable
involvement in the appointment of senior management for both government
and private sector organisations.

Tom Smiler's many achievements are
as follows:
Tennis
- 1930 at Te Poho o Rawiri, won NZ Maori Junior Tennis Championship,
I was lucky thanks to uncle
Jack Baker who forced me to play.
- 1932 at Te Poho o Rawiri, won NZ Maori Senior Mens Doubles
Tennis Championship, with Fred Keyes who played for King Country,
again lucky due to his brother was sick so he was looking
for a partner, again thanks to Uncle Jack Baker who got me
to partner with Fred Keyes.
Rugby
- Represented Poverty Bay Rugby Representatives in the back line
for 15 years.
- Highlights
- Beating Auckland Rugby Team in 1939 – 25 - 6 - Beating Hawkes
Bay/Wairoa
Hockey
- Represented Poverty Bay in 1930, while 15 years old
- Won against Napier/Hastings
- Played against Wellington and Auckland, won some, lost some.
- Beat Australia in 1950 – 3 – 1, the only defeat Australia
had that year in New Zealand, came back the next year, as soon as
they could, and beat us 2 – 1.
- From 1930 to 1980 became involved and organised Maori Hockey Tournaments
all over New Zealand
- I was Chairman for Hona Konewa and Tairawhiti Hockey Association
for 60 years or more, am still involved.
Golf
- Ended up on a 2 handicap Maori links
Shearing
- Won Shearing Championships in Gisborne and Masterton.
- Became Bowen Shearing instructor for over 20 years in New Zealand
- Highlight was sole shearing instructor at a Fielding Shearing
School of 180 school students, 60 Monday
morning, 60 Monday afternoon and 60 Tuesday morning, then start
again with the first 60 and so forth.
- Shore my first 300 while I was 15 years old
- Shore over 400 a day
Wi Pere Trustee
