Wi Pere Trust
Te Tipu Citrus Orchard
The Tiniroto block of the Wi Pere Trust estate was purchased in November 1988.
In April 1989 a local citrus grower and navel nurseryman presented an opportunity to invest in the citrus industry. An agreement was signed for 30,000 trees, 34,642 trees in total were purchased.
Plantings were completed between 1989 and 1992 and the area planted was 20.22 hectares.
Since that time areas planted have been thinned and additional areas planted.
At 30 June 2003 the orchard was planted as follows:
Harward Late Oranges - 3,386
Kawano Mandarins - 6,349
Miyagawa Mandarins - 3,551
Mihowase Mandarins - 10,737
Encore Mandarins - 3,415
Total - 27,438
Varieties of trees planted have been selected to provide fruit throughout the year.
Harward Late Oranges - December & February
Kawano Mandarins - July & August
Satsuma Mandarins (Miyagawa and Mihowase) - May & June
Encore Mandarins - November & March
The orchard has a full time staff of two, George Haapu (Manager) and his son Morgan.
Thinning, pruning and picking is completed by semi permanent staff who are employed as and when work is available.
